Reciprocal developmental pathways for the generation of pathogenic effector [T.sub.H]17 and regulatory T cells
Article Abstract:
The concept that there is a reciprocal development pathway for the generation of pathogenic [T.sub.H]17 cells and protective [T.sub.reg] cells in the immune system depending on the state of the innate immune system and production of acute phase proteins like IL-6. It is found that [T.sub.H]17 and [T.sub.reg] subsets may have evolved to induce or regulate tissue inflammation, analogous to the dichotomy of [T.sub.H]1 and [T.sub.H]2 T-cell subsets, which primarily mediate immunity against infectious organisms.

IL-21 initiates an alternative pathway to induce proinflammatory [T.sub.H]17 cells
Article Abstract:
Research has shown that interleukin (IL)-6-deficient mice does not develop a T helper ([T.sub.H]) 17 response and their peripheral repertoire is dominated by [Foxp3.sup.+] regulatory T cells ([T.sub.reg] cells). IL-2 cytokine family member, IL-21, has cooperated with TGF-[beta] to induce [T.sub.H]17 cells in naive IL-6-deficient T cells and the IL-21-receptor-deficient T cells are defective in generating a [T.sub.H]17 response.

Fast and feel good?
Article Abstract:
Evidence that fasting can ease the symptoms of autoimmune diseases has been traced to the production of the hormone leptin. Through experiments on mice, scientists found that this weight control hormone also regulates autoimmunity. Further study may form a basis for understanding diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
